Posted - 08/23/2007 : 11:49:29 We're going on an outing to catch the Fall colours. I have been snooping the Bruce Trail in the area and there are some great sites to visit. I have narrowed it down to 2 locations, Hogg's Falls, down near Lake Eugenia and Nottawasaga Bluffs just outside of Singhampton. Both locations offer some excellent photo ops and we can remain at each site for about 2 hours. Ample time for lots of shots and then a pit stop/lunch break in between. These locations are on the Bruce Trail so some appropriate gear is necessary. You will be hiking in the bush so wear appropriate clothing and a must is good walking/hiking shoes or boots. The trails are well maintained but are rugged in places. Some climbing is required at Hogg's Falls if you want to get down to the base of them for shots. Also, on the Nottawasaga Bluffs trail there is a side trail to some crevasses which requires climbing. A good camera bag is essential, one that you can sling around your body or preferably a back pack. A bag that fits snugly to your body while navigating steep slopes and minor climbing, stops your camera from bouncing around.
Stay tuned for more information but I am planning a Saturday/Sunday venture when the leaves are in full colour, about the end of September or early October.
If you plan to attend, leave a note here so I can keep a tally of the attendance. |

Posted - 09/29/2007 : 19:17:02 Well we had a great day of shooting. 8 photographers, 2 models and Mom and the weather and colours were fantastic. Look for pictures soon at your nearest Bay Photo Club FlickR page. Big thanks to Perri and Brook for the full day of modelling. |

Posted - 09/16/2007 : 12:28:26 I just got back (Sunday 1:00 pm) from doing the tour for the outing. Up on the hill by Singhampton, the trees are at an estimated 20-25% colour now. Down at Hoggs Falls they are still at about 10-15%.
I am thinking now, that October 13 is going to be too late and that lots of the leaves will be on the ground. As we can't really go on Thanksgiving weekend, too many will be busy, I am going to schedule for September 29. The colours should be at least 50-60% by then which will still render some great shots.
Rather be early than late and if need be, people can do the trip again on their own, when the leaves are in better colour.
Stay tuned for an e-Blast about this giving all the times and locations. |

Posted - 09/15/2007 : 11:34:25 I have been keeping my eye out for the colour changes. Driving to work along 6th Street in Collingwood, there are a few trees that are already brilliant orange, but most are just starting to show the loss of greens. As I turn into the parking lot at work, I get a great view of the ski hills and I am starting to see bands of less green so "the times they are a changing". I am starting to bet that the colours are going to peak around Thanksgiving, but I don't want to hold an outing on that weekend. I have two models that are lined up to come with us and I am starting to guess that it might happen on October 13.
We will discuss the outing at the September 25 meeting, don't forget that we are a week later this month.
Since I have the models lined up, this is going to be more than just an outing and I am going to do a bit of a lighting seminar as well. Some training and some hands on shooting to experiment with what is discussed. We are going to be talking about off camera use of flash and balancing daylight with flash. I have been living on the Strobist.com site this past summer and for those who want to read up on the basics of the discussion we will be having at the outing. go here: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/09/lighting-102-balancing-light-twilight.html More to come at the September meeting so enjoy the reading and any experiments you perform in preparation and see you in a couple of weeks. |

Posted - 09/10/2007 : 18:01:53 Spent last Tues to Thurs at McCrae Lake - just up highway 400 at Georgian Bay Rd - one stop north of Six Mile Lake Prov Park. At McCrae there are only sporadic trees starting to change colours. I have not been up on the mountain yet so hopefully John can fill us in on that area.

Posted - 09/03/2007 : 13:46:29 So if you are interested in the maps for the Fall Colour Outing, go here: http://www.brucetrail.org/explorethetrail.asp
Click on the link beside the 40 years logo indicating 40 great years and 40 great hikes, then scroll down a few and pick up the maps for the sections of the Bruce Trail. They are #22 - Nottawasaga Bluffs and #29 Hogg's Falls.
The leaves are changing now so I think that our outing will be happening before the end of September. I plan to meet at the Duntroon School and we can go from there. First to Nottawasaga Bluffs the lunch/break then Hogg's Falls. Sunrise on September 22nd is 7:07 am and 7:17 on the 29th. I figure if we can get to location at the Bluffs between 8:00 and 8:30 the light will be just about right. So please respond here if you are coming so that we can get car pooling and confirmations set up.
